I am new to php so bear with me.
I want to be able to on a webpage (see example)

where you see "display goes here" be able to in that area or above that area type in a description of the document that will be displayed when you go to print preview and print, it will change often that is why I want to be able to do it on the fly.

Not sure if I completely understand your question. The area 'display goes here' should contain a description of the document selected? If that is the case, put a document description in your DB table along with each document and call and display that field each time a document is selected.

Yes that is the idea but this a test database and the actual will have thousands of possible descriptions
that was why I (group of people with web only access) would like to be able to enter the description as I sort and go to print preview.

OK, I'm confused now. You have a DB with thousands of texts in it. You want the user to be able to type in a few key words and the text will appear - not a problem. Or you want the user to type a description of the document? What kind of description are you talking about?

Or do you want the user to add a description of the document to the DB - also not a problem. Is that what you're talking about?

I want the user to type a description of the document to be printed. As an example if you were to run a filter and sort for people over the age of 40 that drove red cars I would want to type a description of "over 40 red cars" that will be displayed when you print that document. Again every time you sort to print the description will be different.
