common_db.inc query

I'm developing login / logout in php and from examples i see there is a file

common_db.inc

is this a php file, what goes into it and where can i get an example of it.

"inc" is a common suffix for files that are to be [man]include[/man]d from other scripts. be advised that depending on your server configuration this could be a security risk since the contents of the file could be served up as plain text and expose it's contents which is why i typically discourage this practice.

ok, from what i can gather this common_db.inc file holds the database info- like name, username, userpassword- and creates a connection then checks for connection error.

i don't think need this file as i do this from my login page --- IS THIS MORE SECURE??? if NOT how can i make it more secure

Place such sensitive files outside of your web directory, a.k.a. DOCUMENT_ROOT

If you dont have such access, then at least rename it to common_db.inc.php
