Mail Relay Question

I'm testing out a php mail script on my local machine, using my webservers SMTP. It usually works, but ocasionally it gives me the following error:


Warning: mail(): SMTP server response: 554 <myMail@myHost.com.br>: Relay access denied in ...  so on so on so on

I've done some searching on the forums regarding relay access, but why would this happen only once in a while?

EDIT: By the way, the mail that shows up in the error above is the mail I'm trying to send the message to.

If I'm understanding what you're saying, this message comes back, seemingly somewhat at random, depending on the destination address.

Not a big mystery, spam has created an atmosphere where many people would just as soon throw it back as check it out. I think I block most of the Class A nets in South America, myself.

The strange thing is I'm trying to send this stuff to my own email (since I'm just testing this out), and I'm not blocking stuff from SA.

Any other ideas? Cheers! 😃

Hmmm, now it stopped working for good. Strange thing is it was working about 2 weeks ago, but now it just gives me this relay error (even though I'm sending it to my own email).

Anyone?

For some reason your smtp server is refusing to relay mail for you...it is not the server on the recipients end, it is yours. Could be a number of reasons...

Next time you get the error check your maillog to see what is going on. It it probably located at /var/log/maillog (but type 'locate maillog' to be sure), read the last few lines by typing this from the command prompt:

tail /var/log/maillog

Have you asked your ISP?
