Need help with ereg_replace, preg_replace

Hi All,

i'm trying to get an input from users of a list of numbers separated by ","

example 23213,213213,45435

i want to remove anything thats not in this pattern.

so 234324, will convert to 234324

2,,4, -> 2,4
,,,$#%$#%,yteyteyt,,3434,323,3 -> 3434,323,3

I've been spending hours.... but there's no serious tutorials around... at least from what i found.

Help would be appreciated.

And explaining the thought process would be great.

I'd use [man]explode[/man] with a comma to separate all the bits out, and then I guess [man]array-filter[/man] with [man]is_numeric[/man] as a callback function, to weed out everything that isn't numeric. Oh, and [man]implode[/man] with a comma to put what's left back together.

Gets close, but I generally bow to WP's superior intellect....

I'm sorry i should've written what i have so far.

So far i got this expresssion

$num=(eregi_replace(",[^(0-9],",",",$num));

this still lacks the begining and end of the string.

so ,2,,,2,,,4, will show up as ,2,2,4,

There must be a way to remove the front and end "," ina reg expression form 🙂

Possibly, but why bother? susbtr($num,1,-1) will do the job 😉.

(Incidentally, your code fails with your original example string.)

Me bad i forgot i ran it first through a safe string function i made:

function safenumber(&$str) {


$temp=preg_replace(" (\(.*?\))", "", addslashes($str));
$temp= eregi_replace(" +", " ",$temp);
$str=(eregi_replace("[^(0-9|,)]","",$temp));

U dont neccecerally know you will have a "," either in the front or end of the string.

ok got it working but i think its in too many steps.

safenumber($num);   // posted above
   $num=(eregi_replace(",*[^(0-9],*",",",$num));
    $num=(eregi_replace("^,*","",$num));
    $num=(eregi_replace(",$","",$num));

It would be great if someone could find a way to make it more efficient

Well, I could write my suggestion in PHP instead of English:

$str = ",,,$#%$#%,yteyteyt,,3434,323,3";
$arr = explode(',', $str);
$arr = array_filter($arr, 'is_numeric');
$str = implode(',', $str);

IT doesn't work because of this example:

3e3,434,e4e will produce only 434 as opposed to the original spec that should produce 33,434,4

That wasn't in the original spec 🙂

$str = preg_replace('/[^\d,]/','',$str);
$array = preg_split('/,/', $str, -1, PREG_SPLIT_NO_EMPTY);
$str = implode(',',$array);
