I am looking for some fuctionality that will allow me to develope a text editor and format the text. I know I can put specific tags at the beginning and the end of the a string of text but i would like the app. to be a little more sophisticated. Specifically for the clients ease I would like to have them click and drag the cursor of the the span of text and click a bold tag. Is this possible to do on a web app. I know I have seen it done in aspx (net) but can you do something like this in PHP. I am sure some sort of javascript would be needed. Any ideas on where to start with this. Thanks for your time

I cant see why its not possible however there will be a lot of coding to get it done just right, and to work in all browsers.

I know it can be done, but does any one know where a good source to get some info on this would be?

Perhaps I misunderstand, but it sounds like you want a wysiwyg editor. I'd say that's more client side than server side.

htmlArea - v2 is IE only. v3 was going to be IE/Mozilla, but was discontinued.

Xinha - A fork of the v3 release candidate code of htmlArea.

TinyMCE - IE/Mozilla compatible.

FCKeditor - IE/Mozilla compatible in v2 (currently in rc stage).

Its original developer continued to develop it; claimed support is IE5.5+ on Windows, and anything with a Gecko rendering engine: http://www.dynarch.com/projects/htmlarea

I'm quite glad to hear the original developer has decided to continue htmlArea. Unfortunately this website is quite out of date. It still has rc1 up, which is a year old now. I have rc2b here, which was released about a month ago, very shortly before they announced the discontinuation and took down the forums for v3.

Anyway, I will bookmark this page and monitor it for further details. Thanks.

For anyone out there that is a fan of HtmlArea3 and still wants to download it, I've set up a zip file download of the latest version (from January 2005) that you can access:

Anybody else out there got any ideas how to save the HtmlArea community?
