Find a String in string

Let say i have the following string:

<span class="test"><b>matchme    </b> </span>

And i have a text in $str

how do i check if $str contains that line ?

I tried strpos but it doesnt work :-/

And i also tried preg_match but i have a feeling i'm not escaping charecters that need to escape.

Help would be great,.

no i ment find that text out of a bigger text....

"test" is very clear cut no "" and <> and so and so

ok i found out what got wrong...

there was a tab in the string....
