Capture bounced emails

Hello,

Some time ago I developed a mailing system. I used the PHP mail() function to send the mails to the different persons in the mailing lists.

My question: is there a way to capture bounce messages sent to the server in order to be able to delete incorrect email accounts from the lists? Maybe with a script running as a cron-job?

use a from/reply-to email address in the emails going out. the bounces will come to that email address.

setup mail forwarding for that email address to the
/path/to/php /path/to/to/script.php

this script.php will get the contents of the mail as standard input. parse the contents of the email to find the email address the email was sent to.

now do whatever you wish to with that email address.

Thanks for your post. Makes sense to me. Unfortunatelly I'm not an expert in programming.. I'm not quite sure where to start, for example how does the script captures the headers of the mails?

Do you have, or know about the existence of, an example script that would get me going?

there are many scripts that do email to weblog/ email to post thing and will be a good example for you
