directory to page with variable

Hello,

I would like to know how to make a directory show a different file, i will explain:

for example if a member on a site has a username of Scraff, at the moment to view his/her profile they would type for the URL http://www.hedcase.co.uk/member.php?id=scraff

I want to be able people to just type http://www.hedcase.co.uk/scraff and it will show/take me to the profile of scraff.

I would only like this to happen if the is no such directory, so if someone types http://www.hedcase.co.uk/images it wouldnt forward.
is this possable without creating a new directory for each username?
