Largest World in Column of Data

I've got a database with 43,000 rows...

I have one field that is 150 varchar...

I want to find out what the largest word is (and how many characters) in that column of data... How do I do that?

Um...

//this $column should be from the DB
$column = "This is a duck. Here is thelongword.";

$words = explode(" ", $column);
$longest = "";

foreach($words as $word){
  if(strlen($word) > strlen($longest)){
    $longest = $word;
  }
}

echo $longest;

Untested, but it should work. Atleast in my mind. 🙂

ok I wasn't clear in my message... <grin>

I only have one word in each field in this 150 varchar
I'd like to shorten down the 150 varchar to 50 varchar if possible... However there may be a word that is 75 characters...

How do I find out the largest word in the column of data?

Does this sound like a 3rd grade math problem or what... <grin>

Actually from your example you gave me a crazy idea, but is there just a real quick mysql call I could do?

if it is only one word, thing should be getting a lot easier. check on
CHAR_LENGTH(str) or
LENGTH(str)
