User Functions not working

Hello all.

New to all this PHP lark but usually manage to get things sorted but not this. I shall endevour to give as much infomation as possible.

PHP v4.3.10 on Mac OSX 10.3.8 with Apache 1.3.33

I have been learning PHP and all is well until I try and use a user function. For some reason absolutley all user functions refuse to work.

Code with a function don't work at all and even code with an undeclared function refuses to work at all. Even with the most basic function you could ever imagine.

Anyone heard anything like this or have any suggestions?

Ok I tried that simple function and I get absolutley nothing in the browser.

No HTML and nothing in the Page Source.

If I add basic HTML tags to the code I get a page source of:

THis doesn't sound good.

Just tried it on my ISP's server and this time its spitting out this:

Parse error: parse error, unexpected T_STRING in /tier-2/pwpstore6/26/fictionimaging/htdocs/untitled.php on line 3

Version on this server is 4.2.2 on a Linux system.

Still nothing on my MAC. This is really strange as everything else I have tried works including working with ImageMagick or GD etc.

Check your php.ini; it sounds like you've got display_errors turned off. You should have it turned on when you're developing so that you can see any error messages PHP is generating (and use E_ALL as devinemike suggested while you're at it).

Ironically, it's your ISP who should have it turned off!

And of course the parse error means the script is not running at all.

A possible diagnosis based on what has been described so far is that you've consistently misspelled "function" 🙂

Weedpacket, thanks for the reply.

My php.ini had 'display_errors' turned off. Corrected now but still not working.

I even copy and pasted devinemike's example to rule out any dodgy spelling on my part so its not that either. 😕

Any other suggestions?

Now that I have my error messages turned on can some body post a complete piece of code including a function that I can copy and paste and check?

If I don't have anything to do with the code then I know I can't cock anything up.

My browser keeps giving me T_IF and T_STRING errors and I just can't work out why.

Does the code posted above work for anyone else?

Think I've got it sorted now.

For some reason my PHP hates me copy and pasting code. If I wright the exact same code by hand then it all works. Strange huh?

When you copy/paste the sample are you leaving white space before or after the php tags?

I know I have had issues when a single space is after the closing php tag ?>

No clue if this is your problem, just something to check
