selecting alphabetic top-10

I have a list of pupils with figures. Now I want the top-10 with the highest figure, but I would like them sorted alphabetically on the names of the pupils.

So

John | 7
Mary | 9
Peter | 5
Ann | 3
Bill | 8

should give the top-3

Bill | 8
John | 7
Mary | 9

Is there a way to do this with one MySQL command?

Got a version that supports sub selects? If not, you'l need to use a temp table. Temp table way:

create temp table blah (<column defs>);
insert into blah select from master order by rank limit 10;
select from blah order by last_name;

If you have subselects:

select from (select from table order by score limit 10) as a order by a.last_name
