Sign up/decrementing database

Howdy,
I'm in the planning stage of building a sign up page for a visit program...

I'd like there to be 100 spaces in a database and once a user signs up it removes a space and sends an email to the site moderator and the user that signed up.

I understand collecting the information and storing it in the mysql db but I'm stumped on how to remove a space each time a user signs up. If anyone knows of any articles detailing a process even close to this I'd appreciate it.

would be much simpler to just count the number of records and make sure the number is smaller than 100 or don't add anymore.

So I would use it to COUNT (*) the number records or number of rows and then tell it to remove the sign up page?

not remove the signup page, but perhaps redirect to another page that says you are at your member capacity or something like that.

so when users hit the page it checks the db and if it is equal to 100 then it redirects to the full page.

yes,

there's probably more elegant solutions but that will work for what you want.
