Virtual Hosts?

I have just installed MySQL, Apache & PHP and I have configured the thing to work however I am having a bit of trouble setting up the Virtual Host facility. I have tried several solutions in Apache's help pages and I still cannot get it to work.

At present the directory to my localhost is:-

c:\apache\htdocs\

If I had say www.company.com pointed at my fixed IP address what would I need to do so that I can host this site. Would I need to set up a new directory ?

i.e
c:\apache\htdocs\company

Any ideas?

You specify a new documentroot directive with details about that virtual host.

Where would you put this directory? What would I need to enter into the httpd.conf file?

You can put the directory anywhere, although I'd recommend not using spaces in the path name. Here's what my 2 server names show up as in httpd.conf:

<VirtualHost *>
ServerName domain1.com
ServerAlias domain1.com *.domain1.com
DocumentRoot /var/www
</VirtualHost>

<VirtualHost *>
ServerName domain2.com
ServerAlias [url]www.domain2.com[/url]
DocumentRoot /var/www-domain2
</VirtualHost>

With regards to the document root would this be correct?

The main server .index.html is located within the root directory c:\apache\htdocs\index.html which I can access no problem.

I have created a new folder for the new site within the root directory -

c:\apache\htdocs\company\index.html

Would the following be ok:-

DocumentRoot /var/www

DocumentRoot /var/www/company

No, but

c:/apache/htdocs

and

c:/apache/htdocs/company

woudl work. Note that with this, www.company.com and www.otherserver.com/company would serve up the same site.

And make sure that
NameVirtualHost *
is set in your httpd.conf, as I think it's commented out by default. In fact I think the commented out version might be

NameVirtualHost *:80

But take the :80 off if it's there.
