question about syntax(no help required)

Me and a programmer at work noticed that SQL insert statements error out sometimes if the SET field names are not escaped with ` charaters. It seems like the only time it errors out when you dont have the `` is if a field is 2 characters or less in name. Is this the case or is it something else?

varies based on DB being used. Also if name includes special chars like hyphen, etc.

In addition certain words are reserved, at least in MySQL. So they need to be enclosed in ` to avoid ambiguity.
