how to find the charcterset and collations of a database

the syntax for creating the database is

CREATE DATABASE db_name
[[DEFAULT] CHARACTER SET charset_name]
[[DEFAULT] COLLATE collation_name]

how can I find the characterset and collate of any existing database.
