Hidden Field Value

Hi all,

I have a hidden field(below) with a value from a variable ($name = $_POST['name'] ) taken from a form.

<input type="hidden" name="hidden" value="<?php $name ?>">
I want to use this value in the following page as a where clause. (where name = $name")

How can I do this??

Nope.

Here is my hidden field:
<input type="hidden" name="hidden" value="<?php echo $name ?>">

That is sent to the subsequent page and used in where clause:

where name = '$hidden'" or die ('query error');

I want the value of the hidden field to match the value in the database table.

what's the result of an echo of your select?

echo"SELECT * FROM ... WHERE...";

you looked at your html source?

what's the actual value of the hidden field sent to your browser?
please have a look at the html source in your browser and copy&paste it.

if you use method="posT" in the forum try accessing the field via $POST['hidden'] otherwise try $GET['hidden']

but first of all please show us what the html source looks like and please [man]echo[/man] the statement you want to use the value in too

Here it is:

insert into answers(sixth_ans, seventh_ans, eight_ans, ninth_ans, tenth_ans) values('b', 'a', 'a', 'a', 'a') where name = 'Joe '

Maybe the space after Joe is causing the problem??

How can I fix that??

Yup used trim BUT still won't work out??

This is the query echoed:
insert into answers(sixth_ans, seventh_ans, eight_ans, ninth_ans, tenth_ans) values('a', 'a', 'a', 'a', 'a') where name = 'Kevin'

Is that right?

Any ideas where I might be going wrong?

When I remove the where clause it works fine but inserts the details into a different row.

So is it my where clause that's wrong??

Here it is:

$query = "insert into answers(sixth_ans, seventh_ans, eight_ans, ninth_ans, tenth_ans)
		 values('".$q6."', '".$q7."', '".$q8."', '".$q9."', '".$q10."') 
		 where name = '$hidden'";

make sure there is a space between the last ) and the 'WHERE'. also, if your doing what it looks like your doing, inserting each answer into a seperate column in your db. that is real poor db design.

may i suggest going over to www.mysqlfreaks.com and looking in there section on design. you really need to normalize this thing. what happens if you want to add more answers? you'll need to re-design your db. not good. there are much better and easier ways.

Well, you have to decide wether you want to insert new row into your database (with INSERT) or you want to update existing row (with UPDATE). If the second one is true use

$sql = "UPDATE answers SET sixth_ans='$q6', senenth_ans='$q7',... WHERE name='$hidden'";
