concatenation issue

I'm confused as to why the following does not work (5-2 is being used for no significant reason):

$arr_sq_0, $arr_sq_1, $arr_sq_2, $arr_sq_3 ......etc are all empty

for ($i = 0; $i < count($arr_incoming); $i++){
  ${'arr_sq_' . $i . '[' . $i . ']'} = 5 - 2;
}

It doesn't seem to like too many concatenations. Ie ${'arr_sq_' . $i} = 5 - 2; works but its not what I'm looking for if you see what I mean?

The array index is not part of the variable name.

${'arr_sq_' . $i}[$i] = 5 - 2;
