PEAR not supported

Hello,
My boss purchased some space on a particular host awhile ago and has assigned me the task of building his website. After writing some code, I decided to make sure the host uses PEAR. After my question was "escalated to the Technical Service Delivery Team" I got the reply
"No it is not supported and cannot be used at this time because we cannot support it, there are too many things that would have to added to the servers, checked for security, customer impact and QA'ed before we could even attempt to have the support needed for it."
I have never dealt with commercial hosting before and actually, this is my first PHP site. I guess I just assumed that hosts would be up to date with their PHP versions, etc. Is this a common occurrence? Should we change hosts? Is there a way to use the DB.php class without PEAR support? Please let me know any suggestions as I have already written half of the code using PEAR:: DB class.

Out of curiosity, what version of php are they using? It was my understanding that most fairly new versions of php come with a core install of pear already. Granted that may not have all the extensions you need, but pear itself would be installed. If a host wont support some of the more popular php options like pear, I would be looking for another real fast. Quite a few good ones out there that will do that with no problem, isn't much sense wasting the time on one that wont help you out there unless you are getting some realllly good deal. just my 2 cents 🙂

That was my reply to their response and I am waiting for an answer, it doesn't say on their "technical support" website. I am under the impression that any version past 4.0 comes standard with PEAR. I agree that this host is probably not the best one around. I will talk to my boss about it.
