Search box, with suggestions like google suggest beta

Does anyone know how this works? http://www.google.com/webhp?complete=1&hl=en

I was thinking maybe it pooled data from the DB each night, stored the search queries in a text file and then used javascript on change for the text box to update the drop down options?

Is this so? Or does anyone know of a good way to do this with php and javascript?

WDDX in PHP and a WDDX JavaScript library will make this work. You can also do a search out on google or here for LiveSearch and find some more info on the exact details.
