Check how long some text is

Hello,

I am trying to use PHP to grab a name off a table I have and then paste it into a webpage. The thing is that if the name is too long, I it distorts the format of the whole page. Is it possible to check the length of a row and say, if length is > 40 characters, add "<font size=\"-1\">" before pasting the name?

well [MAN]strlen[/man] tells you how long a string is, but you could just display the first 40 characters and put ellipsis after if you're just previewing, for that use [man]substr[/man]
