Alternating colors in while loop

Hi, I hope I'm not fixing to embarrass myself by asking this, because I have a feeling it is really simple, but has just eluded my brain waves. I have a table with several rows which is populated by a database in a while loop. I don't know how many rows the query will return as it is different everytime. I would simply like to alternate the background color of the table for each row. I have tried this but keep running in to some problem. Any Help is great!

Here's what I use in the while loop:

if ($color == 1) {
$bg_shade = '#EAEAEA';
$color = 0;
} else {
$bg_shade = '#CCCCCC';
$color = 1;
}

...then echo the $bg_shade variable in your row color.

$colors = Array('#000000','#FFFFFF');
$col = 0;
while($x == true){
$col = 1 - $col;
echo $colors[$col];
}

I don't really like the % thingy to be honest. Just a preference though. It only works this way with 2 colours.

When I feel like it:

$x = false;
while($looping)
{
	$class = ($x =! $x) ? "odd" : "even";
	//...
}

For your sake, don't make me feel like it.
