I'm pretty sure this can be done if you're in a Windows environment and you have Word and Acrobat installed. You could use COM to have Word convert the DOC to PDF (I think via the PDF writer Acrobat tool - I could be wrong though). On *nix, you might be stuck. Although, what you might try doing is finding a go-between format. You might find you can conver the DOC to HTML or PS and then convert that to PDF. I'm taking a good guess the output won't be exactly the same, but might be close enough to what you need...
