Hypertext Preprocessor.
In the very very beginning it stood for "Personal Home Page", but back then it was just a kit of Perl scripts for homepages(if it gives you any clue, I was just being born), but now as elementaluk stated it stands for Hypertext Preprocessor
PHP = recursive acronym for "PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor"
