dropdown menu

hi,
i have a dropdown menu wher user picks a car presses submit and the next page returns the car details, how do i tell the next page what to look for to create the output from the users choice?
the dropdown works fine, just the next page wont work for me
$query = "SELECT * FROM cars WHERE car_name =???
??? being the dropdown choice?

$query = "SELECT * FROM cars WHERE car_name = '" . $_POST['car_name'] . "'";

assuming you are using the POST method on your form and that the form field is called "car_name"
