Ok, I am really fresh to this php thing. I have been scripting in html for a while though, and wanted to write a script that would allow people to log in and out and change settings and stuff. I asked a guru of this, and he said to learn php. Well, i got a book and still need help on how to write this script. I do not have professional hosting, and will most likely find a program that I can use(not like Apache, which has no gui whatso ever) and ruins on Xp or linux(Fedora 3). Thanks!! Also I use the Ultra edit program to try to write a php line in an html doc and see if internet explorer could display it, and it did not work... why not? Thanks guys. Sorry about all the questions, but no one else, not even my dad can help me.

By non proffesional hosting you mean something like geocities? If thats the case I dont believe they have php enabled on their pages... You would also need access to a MySql database to store the user information. The best place to start would be to create a blank document (with wordpad) and call it info.php with this code inside:

phpinfo();
?>

Upload this script to your website and then visit it with your browser (www.yourdomain.com/info.php). If anything shows up then your server will read PHP. Otherwise your server does not have it installed and I would suggest different hosting.

And after that try reading the Manual!

well, to start with, php is a server side language and needs a webserver to run. so, apache is your friend.

if your going to host this on your own box, you need a webserver anyway.

you say you bought a book. have you read it? its probably a good place to start. i meen, not to be rude or anything, but you atleast need to know the concepts. i meen, for starters. you cant script anything in html. html is NOT a programming or scripting language.
