HELPPP!!! With Apache and Mac OS X

Ok, I got a PHP book and I'm trying to set up my Mac G4 so I can view the php codes I make. I downloaded MySQL and PHP from the CD Rom of the book (SAMS Teach Yourself PHP, MySQL and Apache, if it has any bearing) and the book said I don't need to download Apache because it's already installed with OS X. So first it said to test if everything's working by writing out a simple script and saving it as phpinfo.php. Well, I opened up TextEdit and wrote the code, but my first problem was TextEdit wouldn't let me save the document with a php extension. I got an error that said it could only be saved with an .rtf extension. So I saved it as that, then renamed it phpinfo.php when it was on my desktop. Then I moved it into the Webserver Documents folder, just like the book said. Then I opened up Safari and typed in http://localhost/phpinfo.php, just like the book said, but I got an error message saying that the localhost server can't be found. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG? Seriously, my job is expecting me to start learning php this coming week and I was going to take the whole weekend to cram, but I can't get past step one. I NEED SOME HELP! Thanks. Please excuse the hair pulling, it's been quite a day.

Ok, I just figured out that I had to turn on personal web sharing on the mac, which I did. But the book said a whole page of php info should come up when I type in that url, which didn't happen. All I got was a blank screen (no error message that it couldn't connect with localhost, so maybe I'm somewhat moving forward). Mac people, what do I need to do now to start writing my own php and checking it with my browser?

Phew, I just tried writing the same string of code

<?php phpinfo(); ?>

with Word for Mac, did a save as and changed the text only extension to php, then put it in the Webserver documents folder and it worked, I saw a page of php info.

Ok, things are starting to work.

I guess I can test out my php on my machine now.
