[Resolved] check if a large remote file exists (without fopen)?

Hi,

I'm putting the finishing touches on a link checker tool for my admin console. It works great until it tries to check the existence of a large media file (mp3, for example). I'm using the oft proscribed @fopen and php 4.38. Is there a way just to see if it's there? It works fine with small mp3 and real media files, but anything other than a short to medium length clip bombs it out. Any ideas?

I saw that, but wasn't sold on it and played with variations of fopen.

So, I tried it, but it didn't help, though. The sites with larger mp3 files still bombed out. No problem with the sites with smaller mp3s. Any other ideas? This is starting to bug me.

Please define "bombed out". A script timeout, connection timeout, error? What is the os?

Also please post a non-working code sample and an example url if possible.

Just realized you only said "sites". We are talking about websites, right? http or https, not ftp?

well, mtmosier, thanks for the help, but it turns out that the problem wasn't the big mp3s or anything. On two of the sites, there are calendars without min/max dates. the user can click on the next and previous buttons for days and not run out. So, I put an echo statement in the script and, as I saw that the events for 2037 were being checked, the proverbial light came on. I ended up limiting the calendars 5 years backward and forward. At least I can laugh at myself for this one. Plus, I learned a bit about getting the head of a file in PHP4.x.
