I would rather work for the company that is 10 years behind so that I can personally help bring them to the fore-front of technology and hopefully some day surpass the other company.
I'm currently doing that with my college campus. Trying to get co-ed housing approved for apartments. It's a chore in a left-wing conservative republican state. Oh well.
Small companies are great, if they succeed. I'm a member of a HUGE (national actually) company. Unfortunately I speak my mind too much and . . . screw it, here's the story.
I work for an EMS company that does inter-facility transports (Hospital to Hospital, etc.). I go to school to learn how to effectively and efficiently manage EMS systems of large calibers. On my first night at this company, the supervisor and I were talking. I mentioned how I noticed that they wanted to reach a certain utilization ratio.
He asked me what I knew, and I told him that a 0.5 UHU (Unit hour utilization) is ridiculous. He asked me why. I explained that having each crew (ambulance) run 1 call for each 2 hours of being on duty is insane. It would tire out the employees, strain the mechanics of the ambulance, and create a terrible environment. He asked what it should be. I bench marked against the local city (Baltimore) and how they only run a .4 (1 call every 2.5 hours) on a busy day.
Anyway, he and I had words, and he said I was just a nieve little college student. I said I wasn't and asked him where he got his education. He said he graduated High School and was in college, but not for EMS management. I went off. I started throwing techincal terms and statistics out there like nobodies business. He got pissed and walked away.
Needless to say, I think I'm pretty-much fired during my next performance review. Oh well, it was worth it. If I don't get fired, I'll get promoted. But big companies suck (cuz it's idiots at the top, geniuses at the bottom) and no-one listens to you. Small companies rock, when they succeed.
