Bizarre email problem

how come I can call

mail("[e-mail]", "the subject", "message",
"From: webmaster@$SERVER_NAME\r\n"
."Reply-To: webmaster@$SERVER_NAME\r\n"
."X-Mailer: PHP/" . phpversion());

from outside of a function, but not from inside of a function?

It's not working that way at other scripts within the SAME domain. I don't see anything odd about the permissions.

Doesn anybody have a clue why this would happen?

I believe I know what your question is... but not sure.

Try replacing:

mail("[e-mail]", "the subject", "message", 
"From: webmaster@$SERVER_NAME\r\n" 
."Reply-To: webmaster@$SERVER_NAME\r\n" 
."X-Mailer: PHP/" . phpversion()); 

with:

mail("[e-mail]", "the subject", "message", 
"From: webmaster@" . $_SERVER['SERVER_NAME'] . "\r\n" 
."Reply-To: webmaster@" . $SERVER_['SERVER_NAME'] . "\r\n" 
."X-Mailer: PHP/" . phpversion());
