automatic login to remote site

Hi there,

we have a website which has a php/mysql back end. It uses a mysql/cookie based authentification system.

we also have an group of people on desktops sitting in an office who require access to a special page in the backend which only they can see.

the simple solution is to use the authentification system giving them each a username and password, but alas that sensible plan has been veteod, i've now been challenged with coming up with a way that the page in question appears as their homepage without having to manualy authenticate.

so, is it possible to place permanent cookies onto individual machines or some other way to automate the verification process?

I'm already thinking this might be a bit rubbish - but could you make their link to the site have some credentials in the url variables and set their homepage to that?

It's not a rock solid secure solution, but somebody that just strolls into the right page on your server would still have to know what password or whatever to get in.

As soon at you checked the $_GET variables you could then set a cookie or session to keep them logged in for that period. Each user's machine could also have a different URL string if they needed different logins.

A slight faff, but I'm stuck for something better at the moment.

in fact, is it possible to plant a file on the specified computers that i could then get the page to check for to allow access??

sorry, didnt spot your response there, was just coming back to sugggest something similar. hopefully someone here can point out any major flaws in the url set variable thing, either way much appreciated for the suggestion 🙂
