How to detect the difference in a page refresh or a postback

I am writing an app where I need to determine if the page has been refreshed or if it was a postback. I have a counter that would need to increment by one if the page was a postback. However, if it was just a refresh, the counter shouldn't be incremented.

Is this possible?

not really. well, i dont think so anyway. you could check to see if anything has been [post]ed or sent through [get], if there is, then you can assume it was a postback.

problem here is, if you are at a page, and the address looks like 'newreply.php?s=&action=newreply&threadid=10297892', a refresh would send all this data anyhow.

you could try inserting a hidden variable into your form and toggling it between values in the script.

hence, on first submit x=1. your processing code changes x=0 and stores it in a session. if the page is refreshed xin the POST and the session will not match whereas in a postback they will.
