We receive CDR (call data records) from all of our carriers in the form of...

users telephone number
dialled number
date
time
duration

The problem we have is applying a dialling code to each dialled number e.g.

*Dialled Numbers

00441179638249 - this would UK BRISTOL
00442476511212 - this would UK COVENTRY

*Dialling Codes Extract...

"00441271","44","UK BARNSTAPLE"
"00441273","44","UK BRIGHTON"
"00441274","44","UK BRADFORD"
"00441275","44","UK BRISTOL"
"0044247","44","UK COVENTRY"
"0044117",44","UK BRISTOL"
"001242","103","BAHAMAS"
"001246","104","BARBADOS"
"001248","1","USA"
"001250","2","CANADA"

Is there a way of assigning a dialling code to each number using PHP coding?

have the dialing codes list in an array.

sort the array such that the value with the greatest length is the first element while the shortest area code is at the end.

now loop/traverse this array and keep checking if the number starts with the dialing code, if it is, you have found your area, exit the loop immediately 🙂

Would it be faster to do it the other way round?

Store the dialling codes in an array:

$dialCode ["00441271"]="UK BARNSTAPLE";
$dialCode ["00441273"]="UK BRIGHTON"
$dialCode ["00441274"]="UK BRADFORD"
etc

Then take your number:
00441179638249 and progressively truncate it until you discover its dialcode.

So, first you look for
$dialCode["00441179638249"]
then
$dialCode["0044117963824"]
and so on until you get to...
$dialCode["00441179"] or wherever it finds a matching array item.

This should mean only 10 or so lookups on any number before finding the dial code rather than the other way where you'd have to rotate through hundreds.

If you do what the above poster suggested, just grab those first few characters with substr
