What it's the best search engine... free to add to my site... a smart one..

Google has a free search component you can add that will search your site. If I am not mistaken, PHP.net uses it for their site search. (hint: Follow my link and read all of the options they provide.)

I disagree. I tried it on several of my sites and Google's solution sucks. Unless Google spiders your site to pull off tons of content, you will end up with a useless feature and poor search results.

Of course it sucks if you don't give it the proper time and attention to...
a) properly index your site.
b) build and maintain that index.
c) build your site to conform to the guidelines established here to ensure your site is always indexed well.

Like I said, php.net has it utilized in their online documentation search, and it works well...
