hello.. I'm a begginer trying to learn php language, and i'm wondering which books would you recommend for learning php.. iit should be from simple- to harder
thnx and regards
The best one (and really only one) worth reading is the one written by Laura Thomason and Luke Welling.
I think its called "PHP and mySQL Web Development"
The O'Reilly books are ok as well.
Then again, there is always the manual ๐
I really like "PHP Anthology: Volume 1: Foundations"
Best book I have read, and I have paged through about a dozen now. From a fellow nooblet's perspective, this book, and volume 2, are excellent starters.
I've just started PHP too and i'm using a basic introduction book, "PHP for the world wide web, Larry Ullman".
I find it very useful as an introduction, its allowed me to create database driven web services by reading one chapter,
my 2 cent,
Joe

I actually think that book is absolute rubbish. It's full of bugs, teaches antiquated bad methods from the off on the premise 'you might be using an old version of php'.
I'd ask in the Echo Lounge, where you might find a thread about it already as some of the peeps from here have written a php book.
Persoanlly - If you don't like reading books, you can always just learn-as-you go. Like I did. Just always refer to php.net for their functions, and other things. Books won't really, or might not, help you at all - But learning (where theres mistakes to be learned from) is usually the best route to go... For some people. Just up to you and for my 2ยข of opionion. Heh, Good luck, Rob

Book bugs put hair on your chest and make you a man. ๐
When the first edition was written, there were very few PHP books out. Most read like a dry, boring reference manual. The book's coverage was welcome at the time because it showed application and usefulness. Where else could you see an example of building a basic CMS or even a shopping cart at the time? That's the way I viewed it, regardless if it had bugs.

Laughing stupidly at that - I'm going to make that use that in all my excuses.
I'd already been programming heavily in php for a year when somebody bought me the new edition for Christmas, and so I only really found the XML and Soap bit interesting, and that's the section that has the most bugs and completely senseless logic at times. Maybe from a newbie standpoint I might think differently of it - except I wish it would use $GET and $POST and take a better stance on register globals.
I've been programming for my job for about a year now, so I have quite a bit of experience, but I still don't feel like I'm developing a wide range of abilities. Does anyone know any books I can use to hone my skills and learn some new and useful stuff?
