News Columns

I'm trying to make a script to display news and stories on my site into newspaper like columns. Does anybody know how I can do does? How would I write this script?

By learning PHP. Heck there are a tonne of News Scripts on the net.

I know how to use php to do quite a bit of things except for spliting text into columns. Where can I find an example code or does anybody else know how to do this?
