PHP5 segmentation fault on install

i have just compiled and built PHP5.0.4 on a RaQ4 (Apache/1.3.29). the build seemed to go fine and i ran make install. when i restarted Apache i got "httpd dead but subsys locked". i've tried everything and finally got to this point:
httpd -t
[Sat Apr 16 14:53:55 2005] [warn] module php4_module is already loaded, skipping
[Sat Apr 16 14:53:56 2005] [warn] module mod_php4.c is already added, skipping
[Sat Apr 16 14:53:56 2005] [warn] module mod_php5.c is already added, skipping
Syntax OK
Segmentation fault

anyone got any ideas?

as an update to this, i have 3 RaQ4s. the upgrade/install failed on 2 of them with the same error (as above). the third went through fine. the only difference in PHP was that the successful server used imap-2002e whereas the failed servers used imap-2004b. i tried building PHP without imap on one of the failed ones but still no joy.

apache is identical on all three servers.

any ideas?
