ive finnaly made the switch to linux! and im loving it. ive been running win2k for years, and got into php through outgrowing asp.

about a month ago i bought a book on redhat, and it came with fedora core on 4 cds. i set it up on an old machine i had lying around, and started reading.

day before yesterday, after a little bit of inner stuggling. i backed up all my data to dvd, formatted my main machine, and now have fedora running full time.

ive managed to install mysql,apache, and php from source, and am just toying around with the configs. still having some permmissions issues with my apache doc root folder, but nothing i cant struggle through.

anyway.... im excited about it.

Well, ok, all darkness aside. I'd say with Fedora, make sure you get yourself familiar with freshrpms. And of course sourceforge will be your lifelong companion, regardless of distro.

Beyond that, I'd say if you're going to be using this as a desktop, play around with the the different GUIs. There's huge fanbases on all sides of the spectrum. If you have a less powerful machine and aren't terribly interested in eye candy, Window Maker seems pretty dominant (I used this for a pretty long time). On the other hand, if you like some eye candy, Gnome and KDE are the top contenders. Though, Enlightenment is working on their new release, and it's all kinds of flashy.

thanks for the pointers mate. im using gnome at the moment, though learning bash, ive decided to setup this machine to log straight into text mode.

i will however check out window maker when i get home.

will check out that freshrpms too. im in the market for a good dvd / cd burning package so....

As far as burning goes, I've used KDE for quite some time and always use k3b, which I don't know would work on Gnome or WM. I have heard decent things about arson though. I'd say try a few of them out, search the net, all the normal stuff. To give you some ideas though, here's what my Gentoo box has in it's portage tree for CDR...

k3b works you in Gnome just need some KDE libs. Suggestion make sure you get familiar with the commandline and learning some Shell for automated scripts isnt a bad idea.

If you're on fedora (which you say you are) then check out the unofficial fedora faq, especially the bit about adding extra yum repo's. I'd also check out kde for the details of their yum repo's. There's a howto on their site but I can't remember where, if I find it I'll let you know.
On a different note, does anyone know if you can run Amarok on any of the other desktops?
