I have an existing MySQL database which I am altering with phpMyAdmin.

When I try to add an id field at the beginning of the table, it takes me to a screen where I add its definition. However, when I click Go, it gives me space to add another field. So then I click Save. But it doesn't get saved! I am left with the original structure and no added id field.

What am I doing wrong?

First thing's first, don't hit the Go button (although, trying to add an undefined field won't hurt anything.)

Now, when you hit save, if no fields are being added, can you elaborate on whether or not you are getting any errors? It may help to post your current table structure, the desired table structure, and the SQL query that gets reported back to you when you do hit save.

I see my mistake now. I didn't define the auto_increment field as a key. It gave this error message:

#1075 - Incorrect table definition; There can only be one auto column and it must be defined as a key

Fixed now.
