Another done topic I am sure but what do you know! what are your strengths and weaknesses? I'm talking of course about web site development.

HTML, CSS and PHP

What I'd like to know...

Advanced Graphics Design, JavaScript, more PHP

My biggest weakness is graphics. I have little talent and imagenation when it comes to graphics. Although I haven't invested much time into it :bemused:

My strength. TABLES! 😃

What do you most dispise about web sites?

Web sites with sound. Web sites with too many flashing graphics. Load times.

I think web mastering 101 should be never add sound to a web site, imagine a reference book with sound... or flashing pages.

Oh, is it just me or is New Times Roman the only font which looks good with Italics on 😕

Tahoma looks good in everything. It's my personal favorite.

As for your other questions...

I know... I learn new stuff everyday, but I use PHP, HTML, CSS and MySQL alot. I've used, and intend on bulking up on, Java, JavaScript, C++ and Perl. (used = high school // college classes or hacked up stuff)

Perl only because of customer needs.

My weakness is graphics. I can edit the hell out of them, but I can't really MAKE anything cool. I also lack proper JS & RegExp experience. Although I am learning...regexp more cause I just got a spiffy book in the mail today (Masting Regular Expressions: O'rielly).

My strength I would have to say is solving complex problems with simple solutions. Also my loyalty to the boards. I do my best to give back as much help as I have received.

My hate...spoof and phishing sites. With a passion.

<edit> I lied, Tahoma looks like crap in italics. But I hate italics anyways. 🙂 </edit>

I really recommend, if you are interested in learning more...pick up a nice book about typography. Understanding the value of typefaces and "the grid" will do wonders.

Graphics is just as much about clear organization as it is about illustation. Personallly, I prefer playing with text much more than I like to do illustrations (but the two are and can be very much related). When I was younger though it was the other way around (I think alot of graphic designers experience this).

There is a hell of alot of creativity in a good layout, smart use of type, color, etc.

Looking back at the stuff I did when I was 'cool' is hard to stomach for me. I've vowed that nobody will ever see that part of my portfolio again. I'd rather show boring things than the irritating work I did way back when.

Oh come on vaska. I'll show my old stuff if you'll show me yours. (Actually I think my old stuff is way better than my new stuff. Now it's just rounded corners and drop shadows, eeek!) I attempted to attach my old logo...

Sans-serif: Gill Sans, Zapf Humanist, Goudy Sans, and Helvetica looks more stable than the Arial ripoff, but both look better than Univers as far as I'm concerned. Serif: Garamond, Baskerville, Times Roman (not the Microsoft ripoff, the font that was ripped off), (and that does include italics). At least, those are the ones I tend to flip between on my browser's defaults.

Of course, that does depend on point size and dpi. Verdana and Arial look all right at low resolutions (since that is what they're designed for - it's all in the hinting rules) but both look daft when they get large.

Maybe PHP, Maybe HTML. What I write doesn't always qualify, actually....

I'm pretty good at what I studied in college. But I'm into computer-related stuff now. I'm quite an idiot, I'm afraid. However, my customers are usually a lot dumber than I am, and that's what has, so far, kept things going....

Things I dont like to see in a site

Most Frames
Any Sound
Graphics with tons of Photoshop effects like the solar flare.

Snap! I'm rubbish with creating graphics, but know when somebody elses that I'm given for chopping up is good or bad.

Say I'm strong with the php, html, css - but I consider myself not that good with Javascript even though I've written loads of complex DOM stuff for creating whole forms dynamically from other dynamically created forms (you'd probably have to see what I mean). I think I don't feel as comfortable with javascript as I do C++ or php, as I just write it when it's needed - then when I come back to it - wahh, wtf is this voodoo!

Things I can't stand in websites - senseless navigation! As programmers (everyone reading) you can probably scan a webpage in about a microsecond and immediately know where to go, and if you show a page to your old man he'll like actually have to READ a page and find where things are (it makes me seeethe watching people do it). Well if I have to do that with a webpage I get really twitchy and think I'm having a brain haemmorage. Not a fan of that.
