Hi all,
I wonder whether someone could help a newbie with some php and mysql coding.

I am wanting to create a webpage that allows members to view certain records from a database. Ideally I would like to have a page with hyperlinks which they click on and it posts the results onto the same page.
I can connect to the db ok but have no clue how to create the links and then for the links to query the db and display the results.

For ie: say a link entitled "name" and when clicked it displays all the names in the db, I understand that i need to SELECT name FROM db but don't know how to get that info to echo on the same page or what code I use to make the link.( I only know about <a href> but that requires a location)

Also is it possible rather than to display all the names, it displays how many names there are?

I hope some of that makes sense and hope someone can help

Hi to get a limit number of record you can use the LIMIT attribut ant the start number of record with MySQL.

SELECT $yourfieldtoselect
FROM $yourtablename 
WHERE $yourwhereclause
LIMIT $start , $numberofrecordtodisplay 
order by $yourorderfield

Sorry I may not have explained myself correctly,

What I need is a clickable link on a page (ie: "name")
When this link is clicked it displays the total number of names on the same php page. Not a list of names but how many names the db has. (ie 20)

I am struggling to do both, create link and "count" records.

It seem you want to create a tracking system right ?

each link must pass a variable containing the name.
to a page, this page will increment the number of clicking for the name.

an update function that get the parameter name should be enough.

function update($name, $page){

$sql = "update table set nb_click=nb_click+1 where name=$name
and page =$page";
...
}

Hi again and thanks for your quick reply.

I guess it is a kind of tracking system and I think maybe too difficult for me to achieve.

I have a form which gets submitted to a database. I want to be able to allow certain members to view certain stats. All stats being how many have filled out a particular field.

For ie: I have one question in my form (of many) which aks "How do you rate your BBC1 reception?" They can check different radio boxes, ie: "excellent" "good" "acceptable" "poor" "cant receive"
All this info gets inserted into a database

Now I would like to display how many people (count)checked "excellent" "good" and so on on a different page.

Hope that makes some sense?
