Mail Function problem

Seem to be having a problem with the mail function

$email is declared by the user, and $pass is a string of 8 random characters 0-9, a-z, A-Z.

$message = "Welcome to Emerald Lands your password is $pass, login now and change it.  Have fun playing at Emerald Lands. -Komodo";
mail("$email", "KomodoWare Emerald Lands", "$message",
 "From: Komodo@{$_SERVER['SERVER_NAME']}\r\n"
."Reply-To: Komodo@{$_SERVER['SERVER_NAME']}\r\n"
."X-Mailer: PHP/" . phpversion()) or die("could not send mail");

It all worked at one time.
and every other bit of code in the script works perfectly.

If you're not receiving the die() call and error message, there is something wrong with the server, or your mail settings in php.ini ...

Or, I suppose it's possible that they're getting sent and trapped by a spam filter on the receiving end. 'Twould not be unheard of ...

Tried 4 different email addresses at 4 different domains, hotmail.com, yahoo.com, gmail.com, and adelphia.net.

Any suggestions for an alternative to using mail()???

I think I'd start with a very simple test to see if you can send mail using mail(). Something like...

mail("[e-mail]", "test", "testing");

If that fails, I'd suggest contacting your hosting provider or do a search for PEAR::Mail as an alternative.

Exact copy of the file I ran... It didn't display the error so I assume that there's something smurfed up in the php.ini then.

Quite possibly. Without knowing some details like OS, MTA, etc. I couldn't say. Furthermore, if this is a hosting service, they may not have given you the privilege of using mail(), but, hmm, I guess we wish they would, eh?

You might try adding a "Errors-to: [e-mail]" header as the fourth parameter to the mail call (test) above and see if anything happens. But it looks kinda doubtful.

I guess one other option, more difficult than PEAR (oh, and BTW, one of the board regular characters says that PHP really means "People Hate PERL" 😃 ) would be to attempt some direct socket programming ...
