stripping tags on xls

Hello all.

I have been looking for a away, or a class, to allow me to manipulate an excel .xls file. I found one at phpclasses.com but when I try to use it I get a COM fatal error.

I can't find much on Component Object Model, other than 1 site but it was for Windows.

Should I be looking into the Document Object Model instead? Can someone point me to a site that has a tutorial or something?

All I really want to do is access an excel file, strip out all of the HTML tags, and store each column into an array.

I would just convert it to a CSV, cause that would be way easier...but the file gets really funky when I convert it. Even when the columns remain in tact when I convert it, some special character throws it all off.
