How to protect my includes folder and the files within?

I have my base folder and then my includes folder within it:

/site/
/site/includes/

And of course I have my files within for the includes, one being Mysql information to authenticate to the server.

/site/includes/mysql.inc

If you go to the site and go to that file it DISPLAYS IT!!!

http://my.domain.com/site/includes/mysql.inc

How do I protect my folder and files within so that no one can get that important data??

Firstly make sure it has the .php extension, secondly have a index.html file that is blank. If you want it to be more secure you could look into .htaccess and when a user accesses the directory give an 403 Error
