Hey all,

I've been searching but can't find much. Does anyone know a good and factual resource about web laws, how to develop a privacy policy and all that jazz? 😕

As far as a privacy policy goes, I made a compilation of other privacy policies from other sites, and tailored it to fit our needs. Again IANAL, so I have no idea how comprehensive it is but it sounds good. You might try doing something like that.[/edit]

Just so nobody get's the wrong idea (protecting the women among us and all), IANAL: "I am not a lawyer". Though the expression here used by a woman and I belive invented by a woman -- laserlight (well, maybe somebody else gave it currency but she said "i am not a lawyer" a lot). Anyways, I am sure glad that I am not a lawyer.

The expression was not invented by me, I just picked it up from the license discuss mailing list at opensource.org as protection from giving legal advice that might come back and haunt you one day.

It goes along with TINLA, I suppose: This Is Not Legal Advice.

But we digress 😛

Heh, I like to think of us as a sort of "privacy policy cover band" 🙂 We also do TOS, and "acceptable use policies" but only at weddings.

Well, it's more widespread than just here; it apparently originated on USENET.

It's funny how people think just because you edit something it makes it yours. I know my brother certainly likes to think this. However, it is very untrue. Yah still got to have permission!

The funny thing with asking for permission is that, more often than not when I ask about some graphics on a web site I get a reply with "sure, I took them from some other site lol"... lol so its not exactly easy finding the original owner.

I try to be as "legal" as I can be when it comes to my web development and I like to give credit to others.

I guess I should clarify. No, our policies are not taken verbatim from other sites, I basically look to see what areas are covered by other privacy policies, and make a determination as to whether or not those areas are applicable to the site I'm working on. If it does apply, I make sure that it's covered (but in our own words, albeit we do throw in some legalese from time to time). I don't want anything falling through the cracks. For instance, Amazon's privacy policy is pretty extensive, but we don't have things like co-branding and affiliates to worry about, so I don't address those things in my privacy policy. However, if I do have a client that offers those programs, I will certainly use Amazon as a point of reference. And yahoo, and google, and ebay, and other large sites. So no, we don't "cut and paste" into one big document.

lol, what I wrote must have sounded like an attack of sorts. It wasn't at you Elizabeth. It was more to do with graphics. Text is knowledge, it should be FRWEE! 😃
