how to print random array stuff

I tried this

 <?php
$names = array( 'jim','john','jenny');
print $names[rand(1,4)];
?>
 

but it just prints john and jenny, and sometimes blank, but no jim?

How come Jim isnt in there and why does it come up blank sometimes? 🙁
