Difference between mySQL and SQL?

I've only had experience of using php and mysql, recently asked someone if they had mysql on their server only to be told they have full blown SQL instead.

If thats the case will all the standard mysql functions in php still work? Or will I need to learn a load of new commands?

Define "full blown SQL"

They referring to Microsoft SQL Server? Oracle SQL Server? Sybase? To me, it sounds like they're talking about a database engine. If so, then no, the MySQL PHP functions will not work with the other database engine. But don't worry, PHP has support for other database engines.

Ooh you got me there, the bloke just told me full "blown SQL"

I guess he means SQL-Server

So would stuff like:

while($myrow = mysql_fetch_array($result)){

echo blah blah
}

no longer work?

If it is SQL-Server do you know any resources for the equivalent php functions?

i think its not differrent so much about ideas, mysql is name of database , sql is comment thing. its 'structure query language ' , so mysql use sql , but sql's not useful to mysql 😃
