Longhorn Realse Date!

I will be getting a top of the range duel processor computer in about 5 months. I just need to know when Windows Longhorn is going to be released.

If it is not released in time, I guess i will need to go with having Windows XP professional & Linux (Redhat or Suse - still not sure which i prefer).

Hope you can help me out a bit with my dilamea.

Not that I am a windows fan, but seriously dont bother even thinking about longhorn. There are just far too many things being taken out. If its even going to be longhorn its looking more and more like XP SE.

Although Ive never owned a Mac, the new Mac OSX Tiger, looks really good.

I don't know the answer to this, but can DOS realistically sustain a modern operating system? Do they even have DOS in there any more? Er, well, yeah, isn't it actually called MS-DOS...but yeah...

If I remember correctly the original release date was something like 2003 or 2004. so, it should be out already, right?

Anyway, why in the world would you want to use a brand new Microsoft OS? They're usually so buggy for the first year as to be almost unusable.

I'd wait until longhorn had been out at least 6 months before even thinking about using it.

we all know that 64 bit windows will be 80/20 64 versus 32 bit.

And it will take years to work out the issues.

Microsoft is a bit late to the party, considering every flavor of unix , BSD, Solaris, AIX, Linux, so on and on have been 64 bit since 64 bit chips arrives in about 1991 or so.

MS is still figuring out a lot of things, I don't think 64 bit as been their priority lately.

This ponts up one of the reasons I like Linux so much. It isn't AN OS, it's an ecosystem of OSes. As long as some group of people are willing to toss together a distro to meet their own needs, there will be enough diversity to make sure there is a distro that fits my needs.

The downside, of course, is separating the wheat from the chaff. If there's 3,000 distros to choose from, I can't possibly try them all, so I'm gonna have to research the best choices and test a half dozen or so, and make up my mind.

But at least I get to make up my mind with linux...

I didn't know 😉 - do you have further details? I upgraded to an AMD 64-bit chip/mobo a while ago. 64-bit Windows alpha/beta was free for downloading and trying back then, but I really didn't want to subject myself to that (or just about any of MS's other products for that matter - I tired of the MS kool-aid a long time ago). AFAIK there still aren't very many 64-bit apps for Windows.

Do you have a favorite distro? I've always stuck with Redhat (before that, FreeBSD). But if I had to switch I'd probably go with Debian, Gentoo, or Ubuntu. I hate Redhat's rpm.

See, I've always been a big fan of Debian. I lurve the package management. And once my exams are finished (9 days baby!!!) I'm gonna be seeing how nicely Debian will run on an Athlon 2800+ XP with a gig of RAM...

Actually, my theory is that since win95 was supposedly 32 bit, but was in fact about 80% 16 bit code, it's quite likely that with their 64 bit version, huge amounts will be 32 bit. Actually, in the articles I've read, MS has basically stated that they'll have to ship a 32 and 64 bit IE because most of the ActiveX controls written in 32 bit haven't been converted.

I wonder how long it will take to get a working 64 bit postgresql on 64 bit windows...

Heh, considering there's probably at least one or two of the pg windows who are beta testers for MS, it might well be done before longhorn is officially released.

Oh well, at least there will be on 64 bit application ready at launch then. 🙂
