I'm looking for a book on PHP5 that is based on an example project(s) as a basis for demonstration rather than many simple (and largely useless) snippets of code.

There is a book like this, but it's based on php4 and so doesn't cover the OO features introduced in php5:

I've got a slew of books on php5, and most of them are very good, but they fall short in the examples area.

How about Beginning PHP5, Apache, and MySQL Web Development? 🙂

Yeah, it says "Beginning," but it does give you full applications to build, and some intermediate topics. Plus, it was written by PHPBuilder members!

Judging from the table of contents, this looks like a very practical book. I might pick it up for that reason. But I'm also looking for a more advanced book that covers designing and developing a site using OOP from the start.

I probably just need to wait a few more months since PHP5 is still pretty new.

These books are not tutorials on how to write Object Oriented code in PHP 5, but collections of solutions to common problems regardless of platform. I wouldn't recommend them if you are just starting out in this field (but then you wouldn't be building an entire website using OO techniques, right?)

What do you mean, "failed to mention?" Do you see Kool-aid ads saying "this is a commercial?" No... they simply say "drink Kool-aid, it's yummy!" Sheesh! :rolleyes:

Besides, I think it was more of a blatant plug than a cheap one. What I was trying to say was "buy this book, so we can get a bigger royalty check!" 😃 :evilgrin:

When I went into the city to go to work and pick up my phone. I also went into the book shop and headed straight for the computer section. I was looking through the small selection and found a big red php 5 book. Horrified by all male members of the cover, yet stunned by the beauty of the female in the middle I took a look inside. The authors nick names rang a bell, it clicked :eek:

So I put it back.

NO!, it looked like a great book I was suprise to see it in my little book shop I go to and in Australia :eek:, it must be a good book to make it here 😉

I'll get it when I find 75 dollars 🙁

Yeah... they do a LOT of touch-up work in Photoshop for those covers.

I found Head First Design Patterns really good. Easy to get into and you don't get bored before you've even got halfway through (something which happens to me a lot of the time).

It's not a PHP book but that isn't really important when you're talking about design principles.

I'll be a good little newbie and buy the book. I had a good look through the table of contents on Amazon and there are 8 chapters I like.

Chapter 7 - Manipulating and creating images with PHP
Chapter 15 - Online stores
Chapter 16 - Creating a bulletin board system

They are the chapters I like best but there's 5 more I'm interested in. Seems like a good price for the amount of pages too 😃, covers a lot more topics than my current book too.

As soon as I get paid I'll order it 🙂

sorry to get in the way of a solid book promotion, but i found a book that seems very much like the one i'm looking for:

Web Database Applications with PHP and MySQL

at a quick glance, it seems to meet my original requirements, which were a php5 book that taught using actual complete projects as opposed to just using code snippets. this book has 5 case studies of web applications.

Yeah chapters 10, 11 and 12 seem alright. That's the problem with PHP books they all have the same basic shiasa in the front of the book but each have totally different and very useful examples in the back.

That's why I use Safari . I read the parts of books I'm interested in only and don't end up paying $50 just to read one or two chapters 🙂

The Safari interface leaves a bit to be desired, but the service is rockin!
