Warnings on Localhost

I get a number of warnings and notices on my page when I run it on my local server (localhost) but when I upload it to my webserver the notices and warnings are aren't there at all. Notices included things like the following:

Notice: Undefined index: btnAdd in .........

Notice: Undefined variable: err in..........

Can anyone tell me why I may be getting these notices? I really need to try and get rid of them so that I can develop on my local machine.

I'm guessing that it may be something to do with my php.ini setup and thought about the "register globals" setting but this is on.

That's my intention but how do I do this? I'm very new to php and I'm just trying to figure out why there is a difference between my localhost and web server.

I basically want to get rid of all the notices that I'm receiving on my local machine.

you try to read an array index that doe snot exist yet or try to read a var that does not exist yet

you have to initialise your array keys and vars like this

//var
if (!isset($err))
  $err = NULL;

//array index
if (!isset($_POST['btnAdd']))
  $_POST['btnAdd'] = NULL;

ok. What I don't understand is why these notices don't appear on my webserver but they do on my localhost. What's the difference?

It sounds a little inefficient to include the declarations you mentioned at the start of every php page I code to get rid of the errors. Is there a better way to go about things?

check your error_reporting in your php.ini

for your host check it using [man]ini_get[/man]

Yes I had:

display_errors = On

and

log_errors = On

When I changed these to off it no longer shows the warnings and notices which appeared only on my development server.

It gets rid of the messages and notices but will it cause problems when trying to debug if something doesn't work later on?

Off the top of my head (I don't have a php.ini to hand to check) the display/log errors setting is configurable with a granularity. you should be able to have fatal errors displayed and ignore all warnings. The php.ini file comments explains it well and a quick search of the php.net website brings up this
