Ok, I'm stumped now...

I use Fedora Core 3# w/Gnome. I have Apache, MySQL, PHP, Pear, etc installed and these services turned on. I've checked the PHP.ini file and the directives are all inline with what my forum software (SMF) recommends. I am using MySQL-administrator and have created a database. All SMF files are under var/www/htdocs/forum. I am not at all new to Linux and ran my own server for a long time several years ago but I AM fairly new to using MySQL (at least on my own box). Here's what I get when trying to run the install, settings or index script...

The installer was unable to detect MySQL support in PHP. Please ask your host to ensure that PHP was compiled with MySQL, or that the proper extension is being loaded.

Click here to try this step again.

It's not a permissions issue because I'm testing it under root. Anyone care to help me figure this out here?. It'd be a dream come true if I could get this working on my own box. Perl/CGI I've never had a problem with and right now I have a copy of another forum there but it does'nt hold a candle to SMF.

PS: I'm using "localhost" as my hostname and port 3306 is open.

Write up a quick phpinfo() file. See if you see mySQL and/or mysqli. Chances are, you don't have it installed right.

If it doesn't show up, I would say you need to re-install mysql. What guide did you follow, or did you not follow one?

My best guess is to say that your PHP.ini is not configured for mySQL.

Thank's for the quick reply!. Is'nt there a certain order you have to follow like installing MySQL first and then PHP?. It seems I remember reading something like this awhile back. I ran the script and there is a TON of info. Anything specific you want me to post here?.

Specifically what you need to look at is the following:

Is there a "table" that says above it:

mySQL or mySQLi

If not, then you need to check your php.ini file and uncomment the line dealing with mysql(i).

As far as I remember the install goes:

Apache, PHP, mySQL. Pretty sure that's how it goes.

Ok, I completely uninstalled MySQL, PHP and all dependancies. Then I did a "yum install php-mysql" (as root) and I still get...

Could not connect to host 'localhost'.
MySQL Error Nr. 2002
Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)

I can't find any way of turning this on in the server settings>services. If I could turn this on. I could probably unblock the socket and connect.

Ah. You don't have a grant table.

 shell> cd /path-to/mysql
 shell> scripts/mysql_install_db

this will build the grant table for your mysql to run.

See what that does.
